Blackwater Falls
Weekend Getaways

Davis, West Virginia

We arrived in the small quaint town of Davis, West Virginia, home to Blackwater Falls, around 6 pm on Friday, March 25th. Our first stop was to get a fantastic burrito at Hellbender burritos. We had been here a few times before, so we knew it was delicious and wouldn’t disappoint. You definitely have to try one when you are in town. They are currently open Friday-Sunday for take-out only due to covid. It is a welcoming vibe when you go in to place your order. They have a section where you can sit and wait or stand by the fire until they call your name.

Hellbender and Stumptown ales

Our teen ordered a second burrito (yes she loves Hellbender’s that much) while my hubby and I checked out, Stumptown Ales. He had had a growler filled when I was ordering our first round of burritos, but we wanted to check out the inside vibe of the brewery and have a seat at the bar. It was warm and welcoming with a fire and lights strung around the fireplace mantle. The bar itself was wooden with soft lights above it adding to the soothing atmosphere.

We sampled the Holy Citra and were instantly impressed. We ordered a 14-ounce cold one and kicked back to enjoy the ambience.

Cabin check-in

We then went to, Blackwater Falls lodge, to check in to our classic cabin. The front desk was efficient and had a packet of instructions and activities available during our stay. The packet also included our keys to the cabin and WiFi information. The cabin was cute and comfortable. The lodge provided a bundle of firewood for each night, which we welcomed since the weather was cold and windy. After settling into the cabin and unpacking some of our belongings my hubby got the fire going. We cracked open our growler and enjoyed beers around the fireplace.

Blackwater Falls

Saturday morning we got up and headed to Milo’s cafe, where we had coffee and breakfast sandwiches. We each did the bacon, egg and cheese but chose different breads. The sandwiches were very yummy but the coffee was mediocre. Once we were properly fueled up, we went to the Blackwater Falls overlook. It had snowed overnight (5″) and the fresh snow surrounding the falls looked breathtaking.

We took photos at each lookout point and then headed to see the falls at a closer view. We took more pictures and videos. Including plenty of selfies! The falls were really roaring and looked absolutely spectacular!

Exploring nature in Davis

After driving around and exploring,

we headed back to town for a sandwich and some hot soup at, Big Belly deli. My husband liked the soup (broccoli cheddar) and thought the sandwich (The Dead Parrot) was underwhelming. I liked the sandwich better than the soup so I guess we have different tastes. Our daughter ordered a pepperoni roll and said that the accompanying sauce for dipping was cold. Overall, a very subpar lunch spot. You can skip this place!

Shopping local

After lunch we hit some shops. We stopped at Wild Ginger and Spice and bought candles, a fancy bound journal and some lip balm. It is an upbeat hippie store with plenty to see. We thought one incense in particular stood out!

At The Wandering Caravan, we bought a cement lotus head for our meadow and some artsy graphic socks. It is a very nicely remodeled shop with a lot of gift ideas. The last time we were in Davis this place didn’t look like there was a shop in it for 50 years.

Next up, was Wach’s Gallery and Garden. Elena and I bought some dangle earrings, and I found some beer mugs (our cabin only had plastic cups or ceramic coffee mugs and we wanted to have that perfect pour). The owners were very talkative, informative and super friendly. Be sure to check out all of the small, unique businesses when you are in town, and you will be glad that you shopped local!

We then drove around and checked out a mountain top overlook and built a small snowman with the perfect snowman building type snow. You know the kind I am talking about. The snowman was small, but it made for a great family memory.

After a full day of fun and exploration we went back to the cabin to get showers for our night out.

Pizza

We decided to go into Thomas to the Riverfront Wood-fired Pizza. My hubby and I ordered a margarita pizza (almost as good as we had in Ercolano, Italy) and our daughter ordered a pepperoni pizza. Ordering is done when you walk in and they give you a buzzer to let you know when the pizza is ready for pick-up. We loved the pizza, but were hoping for more of a wait staff style restaurant where things weren’t so rushed. You definitely have to try the pizza though! So yummy! We love trying new pizza spots like we did when we went to New York City. Where is your favorite pizza from?

Brewery

We dropped our teen off at the cabin and ended our Saturday night at, Stumptown ales brewery, for another tasty beverage. Not wanting to miss out on future drinks from a fabulous brewery, we left with 4, 4-pack cans of beer and a growler to take back to Pittsburgh with us.

It was a super cold and blustery night so they were closing early, but they are normally open until 10 p.m. on Saturdays. It is definitely a great selection of West Virginia craft beer in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Be sure to check this place out. It is top notch!

Thomas WV on way home

Sunday morning after check-out we went to Thomas for coffee and breakfast. We went to, Tip Top coffee shop, where my hubby had a cortado (the best he’s ever had, and we were in Italy) and I had a cappuccino that was an 8/10. They offered pastries and bagels but no breakfast foods. We walked in the snowy and windy conditions to a sit-down breakfast place called, Farm up table. My hubby had delicious sour cream pancakes with real maple syrup, and I had a scrumptious bacon egg and cheese sandwich on an English muffin. Our daughter had 2 eggs over easy with bacon, hash browns and toast. (She was hungry!) Everything was really good, and we would definitely recommend checking them out if you are in the area.

Sadly, we had to head back home but we had time for one last stop. And since our main objective of the entire trip was to eat burritos from Hellbender’s, we ordered burritos for our road trip back home! They definitely hit the spot!

Final Thoughts

We had a really good time in Davis and Thomas and would definitely recommend checking it out if you are going to be in West Virginia. Blackwater Falls is spectacular and worth exploring too. We love travelling to see waterfalls like we did in Jamaica and Deep Creek, Maryland. How about you?

Let us know in the comments if you’ve ever been to Davis or Thomas and what you would recommend seeing or doing.

"Always have something to look forward to," is my mantra. I like knowing that another trip is on the horizon. I created this blog to incorporate my love of creative writing, photography and travel all rolled into one. Exploring new places and seeing different parts of the world is exciting and energizing to me. I don't want to do the same things and see the same places because life is too short to stay in the same spot. I hope you enjoy seeing the places that I've traveled to with my family and I hope this blog inspires you to discover new places and opens your mind to traveling more.
